The Journey Begins in Nature
Somewhere in a quiet European forest, a layer of moss stretches across the forest floor, thriving in the cool shade beneath centuries-old trees. This moss isn’t meant to be picked, potted, or pruned. It’s meant to be admired, and at Naturalist, that’s where our journey begins. Long before a panel is mounted on a wall or a rendering is sent to a designer, preserved moss begins its life in nature, growing undisturbed until it reaches its peak.

Harvested with Care and Intention
Harvesters, trained not only in technique but in stewardship, collect the moss by hand with care and intention. The timing has to be just right: too early, and the moss is underdeveloped; too late, and its texture and color begin to fade. Once harvested, it’s brought to a nearby facility where something incredible happens. The moss undergoes a transformation—not one that changes what it is, but one that allows it to stay exactly as it is, indefinitely.
Using a preservation process rooted in plant science, the moss is immersed in a natural solution that replaces its internal moisture with glycerin. This simple but effective swap halts the plant's growth while locking in its lush softness and vibrant hue. It’s no longer alive in the botanical sense, but it remains just as tactile, just as rich, and just as green. Think of it as nature, frozen in time—not artificial, not synthetic, but paused in its most perfect moment.

Sustainably Beautiful, Effortlessly Lasting
From there, the moss is gently dried, sorted, and sometimes enhanced with natural, non-toxic dyes to elevate its color or match a specific vision. The final result is a preserved material that doesn’t need sunlight or water, that doesn’t grow or wilt, but that continues to feel alive. When cared for properly and kept away from direct heat and moisture, it can last for many years, retaining the same character it had the day it left the forest.
Clients often ask us how something so natural can require so little upkeep. The answer is surprisingly simple: because it’s real. It just doesn’t need to be alive to look alive. That’s the beauty of preserved moss, it honors the textures and rhythms of the natural world while adapting to the realities of interior spaces.

From Forest Floor to Feature Wall
In every moss wall we create, there’s a story: of where the moss came from, how it was preserved, and how it now lives on in a completely new form. What once clung to the side of a tree may now bring warmth to a hotel lobby, a sense of calm to a workplace, or a sense of wonder to a home. That’s the quiet magic of preservation, not just keeping something intact, but giving it new life in a new place.
